Switchboard Upgrades in Gladstone
Ceramic fuses replaced, safety switches installed, and the capacity freed up to actually run air conditioning or solar. Licence 87731, compliance certificate issued on every job.
Six signs your switchboard is overdue.
Most people never look at their switchboard until something goes wrong. If any of these apply, it's worth having it assessed — several are genuine safety issues rather than inconveniences.
The switchboard is where most Gladstone jobs quietly stall.
A significant share of the housing stock in this region still runs boards installed before residual current devices became standard. It rarely surfaces on its own — it surfaces when someone tries to add ducted air conditioning, install solar, or run a workshop, and discovers the board can't support it.
- Found at quote stage, not on installation dayBecause we hold the electrical licence in-house, we assess the board on any job that adds load — so it's a planned upgrade rather than a stalled installation.
- RCD protection on every circuitSafety switches are the single most effective protection against electric shock in a home, and required on power and lighting circuits in Queensland.
- Capacity for what comes nextWe size the upgrade for what you're likely to add — air conditioning, solar, an EV charger — not just what's connected today. Spare ways cost almost nothing at install and a second call-out later.
- Documented and certifiedCompleted to AS/NZS 3000 with a Certificate of Testing and Compliance — routinely requested at sale and at insurance claim.
Switchboard upgrades and safety switches in Gladstone, QLD
The switchboard is the most important piece of electrical equipment in a building and the one almost nobody thinks about. It distributes supply to every circuit, and it is the point at which faults are supposed to be detected and isolated before they cause a fire or an electric shock. A board that was adequate in 1985 is being asked to do a job that has changed enormously since.
Davey Service & Maintenance QLD upgrades switchboards across Gladstone, Calliope, Boyne Island, Tannum Sands, Biloela, Agnes Water and Rockhampton, for residential, commercial and industrial properties. We hold Queensland Electrical Contractor Licence 87731, and every job is completed to AS/NZS 3000 with a compliance certificate issued.
Safety switches: the difference that matters
There is a common assumption that a board with circuit breakers is a modern, safe board. It isn't necessarily, because breakers and safety switches do fundamentally different jobs.
Circuit breakers and fuses protect the wiring. They detect excess current — an overload or a short circuit — and disconnect before the cable overheats. That protects the building from fire.
Safety switches (RCDs) protect people. They monitor the current flowing out on the active conductor against the current returning on the neutral. If those don't match, electricity is escaping the circuit somewhere — through faulty insulation, through water, or through a person touching a live part. The RCD detects that imbalance and cuts supply in around 30 milliseconds, fast enough to prevent a fatal shock in most circumstances.
A circuit breaker will not trip when someone is being electrocuted, because the current involved is far below its threshold. Only an RCD will. Safety switches are required on power and lighting circuits in Queensland homes, with obligations applying at the point of sale and lease — but the compliance angle is secondary to the fact that it is the one device in the board designed to save a life.
What an upgrade actually involves
A domestic switchboard upgrade generally covers removing the old board and its ceramic fuses, installing a modern enclosure sized with spare capacity, fitting circuit breakers appropriate to each circuit, installing RCD protection across power and lighting, checking and re-terminating the existing wiring at the board, labelling every circuit clearly, and testing and certifying the completed installation.
Where existing wiring is found to be damaged, degraded or incorrectly terminated, we'll identify it and quote the remedial work separately rather than quietly reconnecting something that shouldn't be reconnected. Older properties around Gladstone occasionally have additions wired by someone's mate two decades ago, and the switchboard is where that tends to become visible.
On timing and power outage. A straightforward domestic upgrade is usually a same-day job with power off for several hours. We give you a realistic outage window in the written quote so you can plan around it — work from home, medical equipment, a freezer full of stock. Finding out on the day that power will be off until evening is a bad surprise, and an avoidable one.
Adding air conditioning, solar or an EV charger
This is how most switchboard upgrades in the Gladstone region begin. All three add substantial load and all three require compliant, dedicated circuit provision. Many older boards have neither the physical space nor the electrical capacity to support them.
A split system needs its own dedicated circuit. Ducted air conditioning needs considerably more. Solar requires specific isolation and metering arrangements at the board. An EV charger draws sustained high current for hours at a time, which is a very different demand profile to anything a 1980s board was designed around.
Because we hold the electrical licence in-house alongside our air conditioning and solar work, we assess the switchboard at quote stage on every job that adds load. The result is a planned upgrade with a known price, rather than an installation crew arriving and discovering the job can't proceed.
Commercial, industrial and three-phase
Gladstone's industrial base means a large share of our switchboard work sits outside the domestic sector. We handle commercial and industrial boards, three-phase installations, distribution boards, machine and plant supply, and switchboard maintenance as part of scheduled preventative programs.
For businesses, we can schedule the work outside trading hours to limit disruption. Thermal inspection of connections as part of a maintenance program is also worth considering for any site where an unplanned outage carries real cost — loose connections generate heat long before they fail, which makes them detectable in advance.
Do it before you have to
Switchboard work is unusual among electrical jobs in that it is almost always cheaper and simpler when done deliberately rather than reactively. Planned, it's a scheduled day with a known price and an outage window you chose. Reactive — after a fault, a failed sale inspection, or a stalled installation — it's an emergency call-out on someone else's timetable, usually at the least convenient moment.
If your board has ceramic fuses or no safety switches, it's worth getting a price now even if you don't act immediately. Call 07 4973 8067.
Switchboard FAQs
How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?
The clearest signs are ceramic rewirable fuses instead of circuit breakers, no safety switches protecting power and lighting circuits, breakers tripping regularly under normal load, a board that's visibly full with no spare ways, or any scorch marks, buzzing or burning smell.
Many Gladstone homes built before the 1990s still run boards that predate current safety switch requirements. If you notice heat, discolouration or a burning smell at the board, switch off at the main and call an electrician immediately.
What is a safety switch and do I need one?
A safety switch, or residual current device, monitors electricity flowing through a circuit and cuts power within milliseconds if it detects current leaking to earth — such as through a person. It's a different device to a circuit breaker, which protects wiring from overload rather than protecting people from shock.
Safety switches are required on power and lighting circuits in Queensland homes, with obligations at the point of sale and lease. Beyond compliance, an RCD is the single most effective protection against electric shock in a home.
How long does a switchboard upgrade take?
A straightforward domestic replacement is usually a same-day job, with power off for several hours while the work is carried out. Larger boards, three-phase installations, or jobs where existing wiring needs remedial work take longer.
We give you a realistic time frame and an outage window in the written quote so you can plan around it.
Do I need an upgrade before installing air conditioning or solar?
Often, yes. Both add load and both require compliant circuit provision, and many older boards have neither the spare capacity nor the configuration to support them. This is the most common cause of a stalled air conditioning or solar installation.
Because we hold the electrical licence in-house, we assess the switchboard at quote stage on any job that adds load — so it's identified before installation day rather than on it.
Will I get a compliance certificate for the work?
Yes. All switchboard work is completed to AS/NZS 3000 wiring standards and a Certificate of Testing and Compliance is issued on completion. Keep it with your property records — it's routinely requested during a sale, an insurance claim, or by the next electrician who works on the property.
Do you upgrade commercial and three-phase switchboards?
Yes. Alongside domestic work we handle commercial and industrial switchboards, three-phase installations, distribution boards, and machine and plant supply across the Gladstone region. For businesses we can schedule the work outside trading hours to limit disruption.
